Pushchairs – keep your little ones safe whilst out and about

When the pitter-patter of tiny feet is on its way, all parents-to-be are faced with the question of which pushchair to buy. There is a wide range of models and the price differences can be extreme. That’s why we have produced this handy little guide.

What to consider before buying a pushchair?

It’s best to furnish the nursery and look for a suitable pram during the pregnancy. This means you’ll be ready when your little prince or princess finally arrives - and sometimes, things go quicker than expected...

You should ask yourself a few questions before making your choice. What terrain will you be travelling across? Small plastic wheels are suitable for an even tarmac surface, while large rubber wheels let you gently tackle uneven forest paths and gravel tracks. If you’ll be walking with your baby a lot, you’ll need a manoeuvrable pram that you can easily fold up and store in the boot of your car.

If you live on a high floor without a lift, you’ll have to carry the pushchair a lot, so you should go for a lightweight model. Do you want to use a pram for as long as possible or would you prefer to have a buggy for the new-born baby and then switch to a pushchair? Are you planning to have more children that will use the pram later on? And of course: how much money do you want to spend on your dream pushchair?

Your checklist for buying a pushchair

Regardless of which model you go for - there are some basics you shouldn’t go without: a high-quality pram has a certification or safety seal. It should be robust and stable and the brake should work perfectly. An adjustable handle and an easily foldable frame make it easier to use. The cover should be weatherproof, breathable and easy to clean. The fabric should not smell of chemicals.

Classic pram or combination pushchair and pram system?

A classic pram has large, air-filled ribbed wheels and good suspension. It can be used from the day your baby is born: the integrated baby carrycot can be removed so you can carry your little treasure around with you. This pram is suitable for anyone that prefers a traditional look without extra frills.

Another benefit: classic prams offer extra storage space for nappies and bottles or your shopping. But this model is only suitable for children up to a maximum of twelve months. You can use multi-functional systems for considerably longer: these have a classic pram frame that can be extended using various add-on modules. These 3-in-1 models generally include a car seat, carry cot and sport add-on.

A pram system combines all the benefits of a classic pram with those of a pushchair: so you can use it from the birth of your son or daughter until they’re old enough for nursery. Of course, you’ll need it to have a robust frame that can be easily manoeuvred with rotatable sets of wheels. This helps you stay mobile even as your little one gets bigger and heavier.

Pushchair, sports pram or jogging stroller?

As soon as your little one can safely sit and walk, you should switch to a small, agile buggy. These kinds of prams for bigger children are suitable for short trips on stable ground and are very comfortable. You can find models with adjustable backrests, padded seats and practical sun shades. High-quality strollers are extremely lightweight and are easy to fold and unfold - you can often do it with one hand. Your child will love that they can climb into and out of their pushchair on their own!

The sports stroller is relatively similar to the buggy: these pushchairs can be folded up with little effort but are generally a little heavier and therefore more stable than a buggy. This means you can easily push a sports buggy along uneven ground. These prams are ideal as second prams alongside a classic pram as long as your child can sit up safely.

A jogging stroller is a kind of sports buggy and ideal for sporty parents. Thanks to its stable yet flexible construction, a jogger can be used on speedy trips, while skating, jogging or hiking. The good suspension ensures that your little one is comfortable and secure during trips out into nature, such as along uneven forest paths. These three-wheeled prams are suitable for children from one year.

What extras and accessories do you need?

Once you’ve chosen a pram, you can decide on suitable accessories. A footmuff with cosy sheepskin is a practical addition to keep your baby warm, especially in winter. A high-quality rain cover made from see-through plastic is attached to the pram when the clouds gather overhead, which can also withstand strong winds.

For summer, you’ll need a sun shade or parasol to protect your child from intense sunshine. Annoying mosquitos and wasps can ruin a walk in summer, so get a fly screen to prevent them spoiling the experience. If you also have an older child that still can’t deal with longer walks, a pram footstep can be a good option. These are secured to the bar between the back wheels so that tired little adventurers can be pushed along by Mum or Dad.

The pushchair should fit your life

While women tend to focus on the design of a pram, men tend to find the technical details more interesting. Both are important features but it’s important to choose a model that fits your life. If you live in the countryside and often walk over uneven ground, you need a different pram to someone living in a city. And while car owners should opt for a model that fits in the boot, people who take the train would be better advised to choose a lightweight model that’s easy to manoeuvre. In general: invest in quality, so you and your little one can enjoy the pushchair for a long time to come. And who knows, Maybe baby number two will be here soon...?
